What is Nonviolent Communication?
Nonviolent Communication (NVC) also known as Compassionate Communication was originally developed by Marshall Rosenberg in the 1960s and 70s in the US, and is now used in contexts ranging from domestic relationships to international peace-keeping efforts. Nonviolent Communication involves communicating with others without judging, blaming or criticising them or ourselves in the process. By going beyond right or wrong, we reach a place where it is possible to connect and create a deeper understanding of what is going on. Rosenberg described it as 'a language of life', and at its foundation it is the recognition and fostering of a quality of understanding and connection with ourselves and others which most of us, locked in our habitual patterns of communication, experience only fleetingly. The word nonviolent originally comes from the sanskrit and means something like 'state of heart where we have no enemies'.
